Paranormal Terminology
Akashic
Records - The concept of a vast psyhic record of all thoughts and emotions.
Some human and some not human. Sometimes accessible to advanced souls.
Amulet - Symbolic magical object
imbued with energy, meant to protect its wearer from harm. Usually a necklace, ring, or pendant.
Angel - Nonhuman entity. Winged
celestial being usually benevolent and kind and possessed of powers and knowledge beyond human comprehension.
Apparition
- A visual appearance, often of a person or scene, generally experienced
in a waking or hypnagogic state.
Astral Body
- This is believed to be the spiritual life force of a person.
Also refered to as the Soul, it can separate from the physical body and travel about, returning at a later time. Some believe
that it is a separate entity from the soul.
Aura - An energy field that surrounds
the physical body and is a reflextion of the astral bosy, which can be influenced by thought and emotion.
Banishing - A ceremonial, magical
ritual to casr out negative energy and influences. It can refer either to a spiritual cleansing of a person or property, or
to the closing magical rite.
Banshee – a wailing spirit
that may appear to be in multiple places at the same time.
Clairaudient - A person who has
the psychic ability to hear sounds or voices not heard to the normal ear and other people.
Clairsentient - A person who has
the psychic ability to feel things that others dont have.
Cleansing -
A ritual in which negative energy and entities are banished through prayers that are spoken aloud
and may be adapted to the users needs.
Dematerialization - The paranormal fading or disappearance of a physical object.
Demon - An evil, inhuman spirit
that never walked earth that wishes harm on people. These are rare entities.
Demonologist - Person sometimes
clergy sometimes not, who studies and banishes demons.
Demonology - The study of demons.
Disembodied Voice - A voice from
a spirit or entity.
Divining Rod - A forked rod (or sometimes a pair of L-shaped rods) used in dowsing.
Dowsing - A means of locating differen
substances and energies by the means of tow rods, which cross when the energy field that is being searched for is encountered.
Earthbound Spirit - A spirit who
is unable or unwilling to cross over.
Ectoplasm - A vaporous like substance that can appear in areas of paranormal activity or from a medium while in communication
with a spirit.
Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) - The recording of sounds and voices of the deceased.
Electromagnetic Field (EMF) -
Electric and magnetic energy derived from radio and light waves to gamma and cosmic
rays and can also be produced from high voltage power lines or electronic emitting sources.
Elementals – Entities or spirits
sometimes also called “Earth Spirits” (i.e., elves, fairies and trolls). A nature spirit that can be either good
or evil.
EMF Detector - A
device which detects and measures changes in the electromagnetic field. Readings between 3-100 Milligauss are tyical in paranormal
active areas.
Entity - A classification for a
disembodied being, which may be a ghost, a spirit, an elemental, or a demon.
Exorcism - A religious ritual used
to free a person, place, or object from the possession of a demon.
Extra Sensory Perception (ESP) - perception
and communication without use of the physical senses.
Ghost - The visual appearance
of a spirit or soul of a deceased being, human or animal. The disembodied soul or life force.
Hex - A magical spell, cast to influence
a person's life. Usually used as a curse.
Hypnosis - A state of altered
consciousness, self-induced or created by an external agent.
Instrumental Transcommunication (ITC) - Two-way,
real-time communication with spiritual beings. The entities provide advanced technical information through radio, television,
VCR's, telephones, and computers.
Intelligent Haunting - A type of
haunting in which the spirit is conscious, intelligent, and has the ability to made decisions and interact with others.
Levitation - The paranormal raising or suspension of an object or person. Rare phenomenon in
which objects or persons are lifted or sometimes hurled through the air.
Materialization - The
formation of a visible and tangible object or human shape.
Matrixing - Natural tendency for
the human mind to try to interpret sensory data into recognizable patterns.
Medium - A person who has the ability
to communicate with the dead.
Metaphysics - The school of philosophical
thought that seekers to understand the meaning of existance and the human soul.
Necromancy - The art and practice
of communicating with the dead to obtain knowledge of the future or other hidden events.
Orbs - A
photographed or video captured anomaly that theoretically represents the “spirit” of a deceased person.
It will appear as a ball of light on film though is some cases; they are not seen at the time of the photo. Since there
are many reasonable circumstances (dust, snow, rain, insects, reflection, lens flare, etc.) orbs still remain a highly controversial
subject.
Paranormal - Beyond the normal.
Parapsychology - A branch of psychology
which uses scientific means to study paranormal phenomena.
Poltergeists - (German
word meaning noisy ghost). These spirits attach themselves to a single individual person and follow the person wherever they
go. Victims are usually children in their early teens, although this always isnt the case. Poltergeists do nasty things to
their victims and surround them with inexplicable events. Some cases, victims has been physically harmed and they have been
known to cause physical destruction. Many physical researchers believe this such phenomena is born not in the psyche
of a dead being but rather in the living being who is undergoing some kind of stress, psyhic upheavel, or severe and dramatic
psychology adjustment.
Psychokinesis (PK) - The power of the mind to affect
matter without physical contact, especially in inanimate and remote objects by the exercise of psychic powers.
Reincarnation - The belief that
a soul will move on to another body after death to work out its karmic debt.
Residual - These
spirits haunt places and manifest themselves in a variety of ways, but they are more often heard then seen. These spirits
do act alot like a poltergeist, but there is a pronounced difference between them.
Séance
- A meeting
or gathering of people, usually lead by a medium to receive spiritualistic messages, manifestations or communication with
the dead.
Shaman
– A member of certain tribal societies who acts as a medium between the visible world and an invisible spirit world
and who practices magic or sorcery for purposes of healing, divination, and control over natural events.
Sigil
- A magical charm that forms an energy barrier and protective shield.
It can be visualized or drawn.
Smudge
Sticks - A Native American tool made of sage used for purification,
healing, and cleansing ceremonies. The smoke is thought to clear negative energies.
Stigmata –
Unexplained bodily marks, sores, or sensations of pain corresponding in location to the crucifixion wounds
of Christ.
Synchronicity - Uncanny coincides
that seem too convenient to be truly coincidental.
Telekinesis - The psyhic phenomenon
where objects are moved solely by the powers of the mind.
Vortex - Appears in the shape of
a funnel or threadlike on film. Rip on the fabric of spacetime that opens into the spirit world and lets entities from the
other side in.
Ward - A magical construct that
guards a person or place.
White Noise - A hiss-like noise
produced by combinining all audible frequencies of vibration.
Wraith - The semitransparent image
of a person that appears shortly before or after his or her death. Also sometimes used when talking about a ghost.
